Her guests are there because they love the true crime podcast she’s been featured on. And she can’t decide whether the killer wants her to catch them – or just wants to taunt her.

Meanwhile, Felicity is also playing host to her future in-laws and discovers that her fiancé’s sister, who is also a cop, is very competitive. Can Felicity hold her own and make a good impression, while keeping her business together and her aunt out of jail? And can Felicity solve it in time to protect the people she cares about from becoming additional victims?

Satchmo the retired police dog turned therapy dog returns to help her sniff out a few clues, and one of the guests brings along a ferret named Cheeseburger, who keeps showing up in the most unexpected places.

This is another solid installment in my favorite cozy mystery series. I was curious how Ms. Royer would handle the ending of the love triangle subplot that had been an ongoing thread in the first six books. I’m happy to say she resolved it satisfactorily, and it led to the introduction of fresh storylines and new relationships that would keep the series going for many more books to come.

The elements that kept me coming back for more–the title of the featured classic literature, the innovative food and chocolate creations, the ever-increasing quirky and distinct cast of characters, the animal participation, the logical and believable mystery solving, and the subtle romance–are all present and accounted for.

The intensity of the danger to Felicity has been scaled down in this book and that’s welcome after the high-octane excitement of the previous one. Like with the others, this is a quick and enjoyable read.

This was such an engaging read that I finished it in one sitting. I truly couldn’t put it down. For four hours, Ms. Packard entertained me with a story that should be implausible but I accepted it wholeheartedly without blinking an eye. No suspension of disbelief necessary. I was hooked from the highly relatable beginning until the totally satisfying ending.

Life is to be lived, not managed. Friends are to be cherished, not controlled.”

I liked all the characters in this story. From Josie to her kids Aubrey and Ben; her best friends Em and Sofia; her parents Patricia and Alan; her three geeks Stuart, Matthew, and Jake; and the love of her life Daniel. I even liked the not-so-sympathetic side characters — Peter the ex-husband and Ruby the ex-best friend–for example. They are all somehow real and familiar, similar to flesh and blood people I’ve met in my life.

Ms. Packard’s writing of Josie was superb. The author balanced the lead character’s forty-seven-year-old and seventeen-year-old selves amazingly well.

That’s the thing about life. It’s the sum total of the choices, the mistakes, the right calls that we make up until that moment. If you change once of those … it completely changes who you are. Who you become.”

This Time Around has many elements that please me as a reader — themes of family and friendship, thought-provoking ruminations and discussions, evocative situations that elicit an emotional response, massive character growth, and a sweet romance. I look forward to reading more of this series and this talented author’s work.

This Familiar Heart is such an affecting read, my review reads more like a sharing of my feelings rather than a formal literary critique.

The act of writing is both a disclosure and a construct.”

– I loved the present-tense narration because it places the reader right smack in the middle of the story as the events unfold. Surprisingly, I also liked the occasional interspersing of first-person memories/clarifications by Ms. Hale. I don’t usually appreciate such a device in fiction because it breaks up the flow of the story but it works for this memoir.

… a sort of other-worldly vibe that makes his presence in the room feel like kind of a gift.”

– Leon Hale’s POV feels authentic. His voice comes out strong. It’s as if he wrote the words himself. The depiction of him is realistic with many of his flaws and virtues equally revealed. This is excellent writing that could only come from someone who knows him deeply and who loves him greatly.

Then there was that electricity–what I call his ‘shimmer’.”

– I swooned at the romance, the instantaneous attraction, the palpable chemistry that leaps off the pages. Ms. Hale captured everything–the fears, confusion, and tears, the joys and thrills, the pushes and pulls–so vividly, it’s like a romance novel within a memoir. Except in this book the age gap, the disparity in economic backgrounds, and the emotional wounds are not mere tropes, they’re lived experiences.

– I absolutely adore the letters. The bravery to lay oneself vulnerable in sharing something so personal amazes me. The fluidity and lyricism in the language are astounding and truly enviable. It’s a privilege to get a close glimpse into the lives of such remarkable people as Leon Hale and Babette Fraser Hale.

You’ll hurt for a while, but you’ll be all right.”

-The last part of this book was so hard to read. Tears clouded my vision for hours after I put the book down. But my difficulty for sure could not compare with the pain Ms. Hale had to go through in reliving those dark months. I have so much respect and admiration for her and gratitude for sharing her life and love with the world.

While every one of the named characters is fascinating in their own right, I can’t help but have a favorite– the special little boy Tad Finch. His courage, intelligence, maturity beyond his years, and feeling with colors endeared him to me. I wanted to hug him whenever he appeared on the page. Truly, Ms. Abernathy made me care about the characters in this book–Lori and Casey, Condi and Isaac, Grand Ella, Andy, Trippy and Fancie, Kait and Vinnie, and even Figment, the octopus, and Guardian, the parrot.

She also made me impatient to read the next installment in the series. I am totally invested in these stories now and am looking forward to enjoying them in the years to come.

It’s no wonder Linda Broday is my go-to author for Historical Western Romance. She delivers an immensely entertaining read every time. Every. Single. Time. Courting Miss Emma, the second book of her The Hangman’s Daughters series continues Ms. Broday’s long list of excellent books with memorable lead characters, heart-in-your-throat action, unpredictable storylines, despicable villains, and a motley crew of support characters that include children and animals (camels in Texas!). Most importantly, there’s humor to balance all the angst and violence inherent to the subgenre. And, of course, a sweet, wholesome romance.

Life was fleeting at best and a woman had to grab every moment. Emma wanted no regrets when her time came.”

Miss Emma Taggart has to be one of my favorite Linda Broday heroines ever. Not only is she intrepid, caring, capable, and resourceful, but she is also incredibly funny. Her internal musings about possible epitaphs are either poignant or downright hilarious. Morbid perhaps but admirable nevertheless considering a lot of people want her dead just for being the hangman’s daughter. I love that she saves herself from danger and defends her found family with all her might. A true heroine in every sense of the word.

Life doesn’t play fair sometimes … We have to make the best we can of what we’re dealt.”

Stone Landry is a great match for Emma. They have fantastic chemistry and have heavy daddy issues in common. Stone’s character arc is probably the most compelling in this story. From getting pissy about orphans trespassing on his property to becoming a father figure to an abused child. His reflections on being a soldier make this book a fitting read for Veteran’s Day.

She held on to hope despite the odds.”

Another aspect of Linda Broday’s writing I love is the way it transports me to the time and place of her novels. Maybe not the exact time as she herself confessed in the author’s note but certainly in the general vicinity. Incorporating elements like the camels, the canon, the concept of land grabbing, and the presence of the Chili Queens into the story goes a long way toward effectively bringing the setting to life.

She wanted to be someone’s whole world, not just a little piece of it.”

The introduction of a third hangman’s daughter and a tattooed stranger wandering into the orphanage ensures the continuation of this wonderful series and I am super happy about that. I hope I’ll get a chance to read that story in advance as I had both Winning Maura’s Heart and Courting Miss Emma thanks to the publisher and Lone Star Lit.

Disruption in Mason’s world, mayhem in Comfort, and one epic chocolate disaster rouse Gloria to action and make her decide what’s worth fighting for. All she can say for sure, is that no one is finding any comfort in Comfort.

I’ve been visiting Kimberly Fish’s version of Comfort, Texas for many years now and each visit provides a unique and fascinating experience. In Finding Comfort, the town and its residents become more and more real. The characters, especially Gloria, are getting fully fleshed-out, becoming actual people and not merely figments of an author’s highly creative imagination. Such is the talent of Ms. Fish that she populated her books with three-dimensional personalities that are somehow strange and relatable at the same time. Gloria has found her family in Comfort and it’s a beautiful thing to witness through these two books.

Everything would work out in the end. If it wasn’t working out, it wasn’t the end.”

Ms. Fish’s storytelling is topnotch as always. The current mystery of a celebrity’s death was not too difficult to solve but she gave it an extra layer of unexpected emotional depth that’s not often found in this type of stories. The physical danger to Gloria when she broke the case felt so real, I had sympathy aches and pains while I was reading the scenes.

I like the way I feel when I’m here. I like the way I feel when I’m with you.”

While it’s not the central theme of Finding Comfort, the romance aspect is a huge reason why I enjoyed this book. I am so glad Kimberly Fish did not unnecessarily prolong Gloria and Mason’s coming together as a couple. There was a bit of a push and pull on Gloria’s side at the beginning but it didn’t go on too long and she admitted her feelings soon after. They are sweet together and are truly couple goals. Lacy and Rudy as well.

Even though we’re hurting and in shock, doing the hard work of maintaining life is how we’ll get through.”

Normally, I would give a Comfort book one of my highest ratings but I found a couple of issues in this one that held me back. First was the way Lacy’s loss was handled. In my opinion, the introduction of the distressing information was too abrupt and not given the proper weight. It would have been nice to mention some of the sensitive contents in the foreword to prepare those readers who have related experiences. My second issue is with the unusual number of grammatical errors. It could have benefitted with one more round of proofreading before publication.

Still, a Comfort story is a highly entertaining story and I am looking forward to the conclusion of the trilogy. I have no doubt Ms. Fish will deliver an incredibly enjoyable read.

When a book educates you, makes you cry, and provides you valuable resources you can apply to daily life, you have yourself one for the keeper shelf. Every Ounce of Courage is a one-of-a-kind book that defies genre definitions. Part memoir, part historical drama, and part cookbook, it’s a totally engaging read.

Lulu Reyes Besa was never mentioned in any Filipino history books I ever read when I was a student in the Philippines. It was a terrible injustice for her and thousands of women who were never recognized for their heroic deeds. I am immensely grateful to Betty Ann Quirino for bringing her mother’s story to light. This book should be in libraries and schools in the Philippines to introduce an inspiring historical figure to the youth, especially young women, and to stir their emotions about the ravages of war that no textbook could ever accomplish.

For me, the aspects of this book that touched me the most were the food memories. Reading Betty Ann’s reminiscing about her mom’s, sister’s, and godmother’s cooking made me remember my own experiences of watching my Nanay Maring and my dad and titos cook during fiestas and special occasions. Those chapters made me smile most often and cry the hardest.

With its celebration of history, food, and family, Every Ounce of Courage is the perfect read during Filipino American History Month and every month.

Quiet, super trope-y, and sweet, Lucy Parker’s newest release is sure to delight her fans. In Codename Charming, she employed a lot of themes I enjoy in a Romance novel — Beauty and the Beast, Opposites Attract, Grumpy/Sunshine, Workplace Romance (between equals), and Fake Dating. Throw in height difference and a little bit of a “fated mates” vibe and it’s hitting all my soft spots.

Life isn’t always easy … Neither is love. But they’re sure as hell worth fighting for.”

Pet and Matthias are so wonderful together all the way from Battle Royal that their attachment is truly believable despite the pretend beginning of their relationship. I love that they are both present in practically all the scenes in the book. The reader can really see the natural progression of their love story.

This book has Lucy’s signature wit and quirky characters, but perhaps it needs more of the first and less of the second. It could also use more humor and snappy banter and fewer subplots. While I like a slow burn, the pacing here could have been sped up a tad. I liked this story but it’s missing some of the verve that characterized Lucy’s earlier works.

With its combination of an adorable heroine, clueless duke hero, witty repartee, and steamy sexytimes, Not That Duke is my favorite of the series, so far. Of the three heroines, short, plump, bespectacled, freckled, clumsy, and clever Stella answers best to the title Would-Be Wallflower. I love that she didn’t have to change herself in order for Silvester to fall for her.

She wanted what Merry had, what Yasmin had … She’d spent her life never being loved for being herself. She’d be damned if she accepted a lifetime of the same.”

And, for all that he’s slow on the uptake and he fought his feelings for a long time, Silvester appreciated Stella for her uniqueness. I absolutely loved reading the progression of their relationship, especially when Silvester started seeing Stella in a new light and the lightbulb moment when he finally realized that he loves her. While his cluelessness made me roll my eyes, I have a fondness for him borne out of reading the previous book in the series and how he was like a big brother to Yasmin. Also, I live in Huntington so, I claim him as my duke.

I love the way you say No to me … The way you say Yes to me.”

Between the pets, the children, the duchesses, and Eloisa James’s signature multitude of fascinating secondary characters, there were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. There were touching ones too, especially that confrontation scene between Stella and Silvester near the end. I was already giving this book a high rating, but the fact that it brought me to tears really brought it over the edge.

My only criticism is that the cover doesn’t represent Stella very well. Where’s the spectacle, the prominent bosom, the freckles? I wish Ms. James would insist upon a truer-to-book-description cover model in future books.

Many of the scenes in Not That Duke took place at the same time as The Reluctant Countess just in different points of view. I suggest reading Yasmin and Giles’ story first to better appreciate Stella and Silvester.

I don’t normally read young adult romance, preferring love stories with main characters thirty and older since those are what I write but every once in a while, I shake things up and try something different. When the opportunity to join the blog hop for Whiskey on Our Shoes came up, I jumped in right away because the cover and blurb caught my interest.

I’m glad I did because I enjoyed this coming-of-age story. I find that my prejudices did not apply. The main characters Eva and Alex are youthful but are not childish. They are appropriately daring to experience new things and at the same time cautious of making mistakes. Their reluctance to share their secrets is natural and relatable even for older adults like me.

Except for a couple of detestable secondary characters, I like the people in this story. I especially like Eva for her genuine kindness particularly towards Alex’s sister Lena and her lack of desire to be in the spotlight. She’s down-to-earth despite her celebrity background and incredibly easy to root for. I also like Alex for his sweetness and his display of respect towards his parents. His confusion with regard to Angie appeared authentic and it was totally understandable.

The depiction of family dynamics, both the solidness of Alex’s and the dysfunction of Eva’s, seems to be reflective of real life. That for me is a plus, along with the balance in the light and emotional moments.

Ms. Preece crafted an engaging and well-paced story that is current, fresh, and appealing for romance readers of all ages. The focus on consent is commendable. It’s more slow burn than I prefer but it fits the characters in the story.

There’s also a great sense of place. The descriptions transported me to Austin, Florence, and San Antonio, which made me miss my former residence. I’m glad I get to visit through the pages of this book.
